Water damage cleanup in your home is no small task. Because water damage can cause some serious problems in your home, it is important to deal with it quickly. Spotting water damage quickly will help reduce damages and get cleanup started as soon as possible. However, sometimes water damage is not always immediately apparent. Here are some of the signs you should look for that could indicate water damage.
Unusual Sounds
Not all water damage is visible, but that doesn’t mean that it is silent. For times that you cannot see the water damage, you may be able to hear it. Sounds that are out of the ordinary, new or changed (like dripping water, creaking floorboards, and running or rushing water when nothing has been turned on) are all strong indicators that there is water damage where you may not be able to see it.
Strong Smells
Excess moisture and dampness from water damage leads to a very distinct odor that is commonly associated with mold and mildew. Musty, pungent odors that are stronger in specific areas and do not go away are signs that there is mold growth, and mold growth means that there is water damage supplying that growth.
Visible Mold
Along with a musty odor, mold itself can leave visible signs. And if mold is present, there is definitely water damage and excess moisture in your home. Mold can appear as spots and patches along ceilings, floors, walls, and other surfaces. Mold can look splotchy or fuzzy, and can range from different shades of green to white, brown, and even black. If you notice mold in your home, call a professional water damage restoration company right away to find the source of water, get it stopped, and safely remove and clean the mold.
Structural Changes
When walls, floors, and ceilings are exposed to water, they will begin to absorb the moisture. This moisture will cause deterioration and break down, making ceilings bow, floors warp, and walls crack. Any structural changes like sagging ceilings, peeling and bubbling walls, or changes with your floor can likely be attributed to water damage. Look for changes in the structures of your home, and investigate any that you find.
Discoloration
When water leaks where it isn’t supposed to, it will oftentimes leave a trail. Streak marks, spots, and rings on walls, ceilings, or floors are all signs of water damage. These discolored spots can grow in size or change color (i.e. spots on the ceiling appear darker when it rains). Watermarks, while distinctive, may appear in many different forms and colors. If you notice any discoloration on any surfaces in your home, walls, ceilings, or floors, have them checked for water damage.

(704) 741-7511Restoration 1, in my experience, is a terrific company! An old dishwasher was, I thought, the cause of a flood of water on the kitchen floor, so I bought a new appliance. The culprit turned out to be a mouse who’d bitten a hole in the outflow tube! To repair the damage to the flooring underneath I was referred to a company who gave me a huge estimate (which they refused to reduce), so I looked online and, thank goodness, decided on Restoration 1. They came the next day, studied the situation, gave me a reasonable assessment saving me several hundred dollars, and began the drying and repair work, ending with much nicer flooring. They were professional, were on time, nice to deal with, and I highly recommend them.
Had a burst pipe in the attic that leaked into a couple bedrooms, the hallway and into part of the kitchen and living room. When I called Todd at Restoration 1 he answered the phone promptly, was very polite and professional, and answered all my questions. It was a Sunday and he said he’d be there in about 90min but made it in closer to an hour. He and a co-worker worked until nearly 10pm on Sun night to take care of the worst of the water. He came back daily for several days to some minor final clean up and to check the progress of the fans and dry out of our house. He was always very professional and very easy to work with. He contacted our insurance and dealt directly with them for the billing. The only downside is that they only do the cleaning/drying…not the repairs. However, if I had water damage in the future I would not hesitate to use them again.
